The famous brand was created in 1875 by Spaniard Don Inocencio Alvarez inspired by Shakespeare's play. Although the brand gained real popularity in 1903, after its acquisition by Don José Fernandez Rodriguez, more precisely Don "Pepin", as his friends called him, and the opening of the Romeo and Juliet cigar factory that still operates to this day. The brand has retained the original recipe of the tobacco blend made from the finest plantation leaves in the Vuelta Abajo region.
